Litigation
The term litigation refers to a case, controversy, or lawsuit. It is a contest authorized by law and pursued in a court for the purpose of enforcing a right. The parties to a lawsuit, commonly referred to as plaintiffs and defendants, are called litigants. When a lawsuit begins, initial court filings define the parties' legal positions then preparation for trial begins. Typically, at least some attempt at negotiating a settlement will be made before a case proceeds to trial. If either party is dissatisfied with the results at trial, they can file an appeal.
