Rick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but moved to St. Louis shortly after birth. The son of a State Farm Insurance executive, Rick grew up in the insurance industry, ultimately moving to Columbia in 1979. After graduating from Hickman High School in Columbia, he attended college at the University of Missouri graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and majors in both finance and marketing. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law in 1993.

He began his legal career with the law firm of Knight, Ford, Wright, Atwill, Parshall & Baker in 1993, and co-founded Atwill & Montgomery with his partner, Dan Atwill. Rick has extensive experience in the area of workers’ compensation having tried hundreds of cases to their conclusion, including numerous appeals at the Labor and Industrial Relations Commission and Courts of Appeals. He has spoken on many occasions at the request of organizations including the Missouri Bar Association, the Division of Workers’ Compensation, the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Associated Industries of Missouri, to name a few. He has achieved an AV Peer Review Rating from the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of Pre-Eminent Lawyers, the highest rating available.
